Fiqh 4: Fasting And Zakat

Fiqh Level 4: Fiqh of Fasting and Zakat provides students with a practical understanding of two important acts of worship and two of the pillars of Islam: Sawm (Fasting) and Zakat (Obligatory Charity). The course explains their rulings, conditions, purposes, and correct application in the daily life of a Muslim.

The course begins with the rulings related to establishing the month of Ramadan and explains who is required to fast, the conditions and pillars of fasting, and the permissible excuses for not fasting. Students will also study the recommended and disliked acts while fasting, making up missed fasts (Qada’), atonement (Kaffarah), voluntary and prohibited fasting, and I‘tikaf (spiritual retreat).

 Students will study the importance and conditions of Zakat, the meaning of Nisab, the types of wealth upon which Zakat is due, how Zakat is calculated, and the categories of people who are eligible to receive it.

By the End of the Course, Students Will Be Able To:

  • Understand the meaning, importance, and wisdom of Fasting and Zakat.
  • Identify who is required to fast and who may be excused.
  • Understand the essential conditions and pillars of a valid fast.
  • Distinguish between acts that invalidate the fast and those that are disliked or permissible.
  • Understand the rulings of Qada’, Kaffarah, voluntary fasting, and I‘tikaf.
  • Understand when Zakat becomes obligatory and the basic conditions for paying it.
  • Recognize the main types of wealth subject to Zakat and understand how Zakat is calculated.
  • Identify those who are entitled to receive Zakat.
  • Apply the basic rulings of Fasting and Zakat correctly and confidently in their daily lives.

Through this course, students will gain both knowledge of the Islamic rulings and practical guidance that will help them perform these important acts of worship correctly and with greater understanding of their spiritual and social purposes.
